Secret Santa with household exclusions

Keep couples, roommates, or families from drawing one another—without making the organizer guess whether the rules can work.

What a household exclusion does

A household is a group of at least two people. Everyone in that group is blocked from drawing anyone else in the same group. The rule is mutual. People can still draw eligible participants outside that household.

For six people in three couples—Alex and Jamie, Morgan and Taylor, Sam and Robin—add the three couples as separate households. Each person will draw someone outside their couple.

When a household is too large

Imagine five participants, three of whom are in one household. Those three people can only give to the other two people. Since everyone must receive exactly one gift, that cannot produce a complete draw.

The same conflict can arise from several overlapping individual exclusions, even when no single household looks too large. Checking only whether each person has one possible recipient is not enough.

A smaller example: three people and one couple

Alex and Jamie are a couple and may not draw each other. Morgan is the third participant. Alex can only draw Morgan, and Jamie can only draw Morgan. Two givers cannot share one recipient, so no complete draw exists. Allow one of those pairings or invite more eligible participants, then check again.

One-way versus mutual exclusions

A one-way rule prevents Alex from drawing Jamie, while Jamie may still draw Alex. Use a mutual rule when neither person should draw the other. The interface labels the direction so you can check it before generating results.

What the conflict message means

The generator finds a group of givers whose combined eligible recipient pool is smaller than the group itself. The message identifies those people. It explains a proven conflict, rather than assuming a slow search means your draw is impossible.

Removing one particular rule is not guaranteed to fix every conflict. Adjust the relevant exclusions and check again. The tool never silently ignores a rule.

Does it prevent every two-person swap?

No. A valid draw may contain two people giving to one another unless an exclusion prevents that specific pairing. The generator does not promise a single cycle or equally likely sampling of every valid assignment.
